Growing Sustainably for the Community

By Russ Vollmer, Family Farmer, Vollmer Farm, Bunn, North Carolina

Vollmer Farm, located in Bunn, North Carolina, is a fifth generation family farm now operated by Russ Vollmer. Though Russ left the farm for a career in crop insurance, he returned when his father John Vollmer became ill. It was during John’s tenure that the farm transitioned from growing tobacco to growing organic food, beginning with pick-your-own strawberries and expanding into other crops.

Today, Russ leads Vollmer Farm into the next generation and continues the family commitment to growing organic produce for their community. Russ is dedicated to preserving a real farm experience for families and children on school field trips. He has added a farm store and an agritourism business that bring visitors to Vollmer Farm from near and far.

Since 1985, the annual Farm Aid concert has moved around the country, raising awareness about the value of family farmers and showcasing the agriculture of different regions of the U.S. and the unique challenges and opportunities family farmers face there. Farm Aid 2014 took place on September 13 in Raleigh, North Carolina, giving us a chance to take a look at serious issues affecting family farmers across the South and how farmers are growing a better tomorrow.
