working together works

The scope of World Food Day makes possible almost unlimited combinations of people, ideas, and resources opening up incredible possibilities for experimentation. A project or program can be tested by WFD groups, together, without threatening any single organization or institution; or it can be tried in a number of settings, and the best ideas combined in another year.  For example:

Eating Out to Help the Hungry
WFD activities involving of the restaurant segment of different communities have led to several programs like RSVVP in Baltimore, Sweet Charity in Chicago, and the "7% Solution" in Detroit.  These programs raise money to help the hungry in the community by restaurants donating some percentage of the price of every meal served on a particular day.

Keynote Speakers & Press Conferences
World Food Day provides a focus: a regular date and a worldwide highlight for common concerns. Use WFD to announce awards, release research findings, and kick-off  fund and food collections to build up public awareness.  Bringing in a keynote speaker to address your community group at this time is another way to add momentum to the overall WFD effort.

WFD in the Classroom
Educational materials are available from almost all of our national committee members and many local groups have developed their own lessons for World Food Day.  Feeding Minds Fighting Hunger is a great resource that provides classroom materials for teachers to help children and youth discuss and understand the problem of hunger in the world, with the hope of preparing them to help create a world free from hunger.

WFD on Campus
World Food Day has proven to be a uniting force to bring campus and community together in a variety of ways, most notably through the planning and participation in the WFD satellite teleconference. Students have become involved in community outreach and service projects in new ways, and community groups of all kinds have found new resources and contacts heretofore untapped

Policy and Dialog
World Food Day offers a time when policymakers and constituents from all points of view can engage in informed dialogue. Invite candidates and officeholders to make public statements on their positions; hold a debate on the issues, start a petition or letter-writing campaign.
