2006 World Food Day events highlighting the power of the people help insure food security for all – every day!

World Food Day is a story of concern and action at all levels in communities around the world.   For 61 years the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN has been at work wherever its skills have been needed, and for 26 years the citizens of the world have been joining forces with FAO through the annual worldwide observance on October 16th to focus on FAO’s efforts and to add their own impact in a thousand ways. 

The following selection of events and  activities is a partial guide to “People Power” at work.

Home Harvest Dinners in Oregon
October 16-20
Oregon Governor Kulongoski calls on citizens to host Home Harvest Dinners, a tradition begun in 2004.   Dinner hosts ask guests to carry on the tradition by hosting their own dinners the following year.
The meals raise funds for their regional food banks.

World Fest Market 2006
October 13-15
Will Rogers Theatre -- Oklahoma City
The week-end event kicks off with a gala Preview Party and Silent Auction and will feature international food, music and shopping, followed by the WorldFest Market.

World Hunger Year and the Media Studies and Film Department of the New School in New York City will hold their annual anti-poverty forum featuring journalists, advocates and grassroots organizations.

The Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement and the Latimer County Food Bank co-sponsor the annual event at Colorado State University in observance of World Food Day.  Other events include a Hunger Banquet and the WFD Teleconference.

Lutheran Synod Congregations to Skip-a-Meal
Pablo Neruda – “For now I ask no more than the justice of eating.”
130 Congregations will use World Food Day for a hunger appeal.   The cost of meals donated will be collected at worship services on October 15th.

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to Honor Volunteers
October 18, 2006
Governor Edward G. Rendell will present plaques and Certificates of Commendation to outstanding volunteers from emergency food pantries and food banks at the 18th World Food Day observance in the Capitol Rotunda.

Gabriel Cousens, MS interviews Eric Holt-Gimenez
Gabriel Cousens, M.D., host of an online radio show and author on world nutrition issues, interviews Eric Holt-Giménez, the Executive Director of FoodFirst/Institute for Food and Development Policy. Eric is the author of the latest Food First Book, "Campesino a Campesino: Voices from Latin America’s Farmer to Farmer Movement for Sustainable Agriculture," which chronicles the development of this movement in Mexico and Central America over two and a half decades. Tune in as Eric and Gabriel discuss how to integrate activism with your livelihood to create sustainable and impactful results to create food abundance for all people at the root level. Duration of interview is one hour. The interview was conducted on August 4, 2006.

New Jersey Food Drive
October 16-20
Managed Health Care Associates, Inc. is observing World Food Day by holding a food drive and donating the food received during the week to the Interfaith Food Pantry of Morristown.  It is planned to make this an annual event.

Since it began World Food Day has found a way to tell the story of people power in new ways.  It's happening again in 2006 . . . .

Official events have a new look . . . from Rome to the UN to Iowa City to Albuquerque . . .

There are NEW materials for kids on the right to food . . . the result of a NEW partnership between FAO and WAGGGS (World Alliance of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts) . . . visit the Feeding Minds website  www.feedingminds.org to learn about the NEW resources.

People power on the campus will find a  NEW expression through the launching of the University War on Hunger . . . and the New film which will be featured on the teleconference . . .

There are other NEW partnerships . . .Like the NEW endeavor linking food banks and the Bank of America . . .

There are NEW venues for ZIGGY as our Ambassador . . .first there was a press release by United  Press Syndicate which was picked up by Editor and Publisher . . . Prevention magazine used Ziggy in their newest cookbook. . . and the Christian Booksellers are promoting World Food Day along with Ambassador Tony Hall’s new book “Changing the Face of Hunger."

All the usual events continue like National Food Bank Week (October 15-21); National School Lunch Week (October 9-13); and more than 2000 CWS CROP Walks across the nation.  Send your events to be posted.  Sponsoring organizations are invited to add additional events using their password.

 

This WFD logo, composed of pieces of the logos of our hundreds of sponsors, is a reminder that World Food Day belongs to everyone and should be USED by everyone to help involve all our nation’s caring citizens in showing the POWER OF THE PEOPLE!!
