2004 WFD BULLETIN BOARD
October 16 -  A focus for year-around action

The 24th observance of World Food Day, as always,  includes a wide diversity of events.  There are WFD observances in every community in the U.S. during October - all part of the global effort to build an International Alliance Against Hunger.  Here are some representative highlights. 

WORLD FOOD DAY AT FAO HEADQUARTERS - Rome, Italy
October 15, 2004 in FAO Plenary Hall
Keynote:  President Ferenc Madl, Republic of Hungary 

A week-long series of events is planned, including awards, nominations of new FAO Ambassadors, a Farmers' Celebration and a Youth Forum

WFD AT THE UNITED NATIONS - New York City
October 18th  Biodiversity for Food Security

FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf and UN officials will participate in the mid-afternoon observance.  The program will feature school children from the New York area and a live video uplink with children in Mexico -introducing The Growing Connection - a school garden initiative.

WORLD FOOD PRIZE AWARD CEREMONY AND SYMPOSIUM
October 14-15
Des Moines, Iowa

The World Food Prize will be awarded to two distinguished scientists, Professor Yuan Longping of China and Dr. Monty Jones of Sierra Leone.    The state of Iowa proclaimed October 16th, World Food Day, as an annual Day of Recognition honoring Dr. Norman Borlaug.

POLITICS OF HUNGER:  WHAT'S AT STAKE?
October 15th  12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. eastern time
Sponsored by the U.S. National Committee for World Food Day

There will be hundreds of WFD teleconference sites at colleges across America and at U.S. Embassies across the world.  Some colleges have week-long observances.  The program is also broadcast in many areas by PBS stations, cable and ETV networks and the DISH network.  It will also be available by webcast.

BREAD FOR THE WORLD SUNDAY
October 24, 2004

On a suitable Sunday between World Food Day and Thanksgiving congregations are asked to show their solidarity with hungry people through Bread for the World Sunday.   Bread for the World recently released a lectionary aid focused on hunger - Hunger for the Word - and is a key organizer of the U.S. Alliance to End Hunger.

EMPTY BOWL PROJECT

In 1990 a high school teacher in Michigan helped his students solve a problem - how to raise funds to support a food drive for World Food Day.  What evolved was the Empty Bowl project which involved making ceramic bowls for a fundraising meal.  The concept has spread across the country with many variations on World Food Day and throughout the year.

WORLD HUNGER EVENTS AT PENN STATE

World Food Day will be marked at Penn State with various campus and community activities, including an analytical and artistic contest, an information fair, a fast, films and food drives.  The keynote speaker on October 11th will be Dr. Gleen Geelhoed of Medical Education at the George Washington University Medical Center.  His address is Hunger and Our Response to It.

HUNGER NO MORE:  FACES BEHIND THE FACTS

The National Council of Churches (NCC) produced the documentary which approaches hunger not as just a social issue but also a moral issue that needs immediate resolution.  Partners with NCC are Church World Service, Bread for the World, the United Methodist Committee on Relief, the World Hunger Program of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Society of St. Andrew and Mennonite Media.


Other examples of observances of World Food Day include Governors' proclamations; United Against Hunger events which were extended through World Food Day; Feeding Minds, Fighting Hunger, a global education initiative in more than a dozen languages,  is issuing new multi-language CDs;  nationwide local clubs of the General Federation of Women's Clubs are holding observances; and the U.S. Committee is working with a new Australian initiative Feast2Feed  in a World Food Day launch.

There is enough food for everyone's need, but not enough for everyone's greed.
